Ready to chase their shadows in Fairmont
|
A beautiful morning greeted runners in Fairmont on Saturday, June
19th. They were there to run and to lend a hand to the Literacy
Volunteers of Marion County, a United Way agency, at the first Run to
Read 5K. A 1.55 mile loop through residential streets provided a few
hills, but nothing too tough. Completing the loop twice brought you
to the finish of the 5K event while the walkers called it a day after
a single lap. With plenty of morning sun and low humidity, everything
was set for some fun competition.

Will Hunter, a definite speed reader
|
Just after 9:00am, the starting signal was given and the racing got
underway. Jumping out to the lead was
Michael Brosenne, but
Will Hunter and
Greg Patton were calmly pacing
themselves a little ways back. With about half a lap completed,
Brosenne's pace slowed enough to allow Hunter to come around and take
up the lead position. Hunter continued to run strong the rest of the
way to secure a first overall finish in 17:46.
Later in the race, Patton was also able to make a move around
Brosenne. Patton pushed ahead to cross the line at 18:41 and take
second overall with Brosenne hanging on for third overall at 19:04.

Branden and David King enjoy a big day of walking
|
Keeping everything in the family,
Holly Hunter, the overall
winner's sister, ran a strong race to finish 10th overall. Her time
of 21:01 was also first among the women runners. The two can be seen
this year running as a formidable pair for WV Wesleyan College.
Also running well among the female crowd was second place Kristen Nestor
with a time of 22:35 and third place Linda Huffman with a time of 23:37.
Many more folks made their way around the course to finish with smiles
while plenty of refreshments waited. It was all thanks to the hard
work of many volunteers who you can be sure will continue to make the
event even better in future years. And, maybe a few more fortunate
individuals will be able to read all about the racing on WVOutside.
