The region's finest ski racers will be at Snowshoe Mountain, January 31 and February 1 for the 25th anniversary of the Cupp Run Challenge. The two-day event features a dual slalom race on Sunday and a giant slalom race on Monday. Professional skiers will compete for a cash purse totaling $5,000 and amateurs will compete for more than $3,000 in prizes.
Designed by Olympic gold medallist Jean Claude Killy in 1973, the 1500 vertical feet, black diamond Cupp Run has given many skiers the run of their life. Twenty-five years ago, during Cupp Run's and Snowshoe Mountain's inaugural year, a race unlike any other was born. "You've got to be in shape to be able to handle the top to bottom run during the race," says Bob Koontz, Snowshoe's Director of Skier Services. "Your legs are burning when you cross the finish line on Cupp's lower steep." This giant slalom course has become the largest, most challenging downhill race in the region, featuring more than 1000 vertical feet in just over a mile and a quarter.
Registration for the races is set for Sunday and Monday, January 31 and February 1 from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. in the Snowshoe area's main lodge, Shavers Centre. Racing begins a 10 a.m. each day. The 25th Annual Cupp Run Challenge is sponsored by Rolling Rock and Draper Aden Associates, a professional engineering, surveying and planning firm located in Richmond and Blacksburg, Virginia. Draper Aden has been working with Intrawest toward the renaissance of Snowshoe Mountain.
